And no one needs to answer this, but if I say "Kent State" to you, what's your first thought? And yes, "A school, I guess?" is a valid answer.

And yes, I do have a reason for asking.

Well, you're asking for an answer. But for me, it's the most obvious one. Followed by the photo Hugh linked to. Followed by the conscious attempt to think of something _else_ about Kent State... like Devo.

The first thing that comes to mind is the 1970 shootings/riot.

The second thing is that they have an outstanding archaeology graduate program. :)

First, Damn, for all the time I spent in that town, I should've just gone to school at Kent State and saved myself a lot of gas money.

Next, 'four dead in Ohio'.

Then, They have a good memorial set up now.

Finally, I wonder where the students go to hang out now that Brady's is gone.

I believe your school was a much better one to attend - even if you would have saved gas money. :P

the list is far too long... I'm posting the highlights

A) at the top is "omg would they just fucking stop protesting and crying all ready?!?" It's been HOW many years???

B) none of us know the whole truth about the shootings - it's based far too much on perception. (I am completely on the fence about whether it was an accident or intentional because the more stories of people that were there at that time I hear the more there was sooo much more to it then the part everyone knows.) Before anyone jumps down my throat - I lived in the area for 30 years, went to Kent myself and my father attended at the time of the shootings - amongst the bunches of other people I know with input. The fact of the matter is:

C) there's 4 dead in Ohio. And I like the Dink cover, better.

D.) Kent read, Kent write, Kent state. (say it with the correct accent and it becomes can't read, can't right, kent state) which is the reason I have since moved elsewhere....

E) *sniff* Brady's is gone, man.

F) well Kent State is a hell of a lot better then the University of Akron - if one must choose between freaks like us, and the urban wasteland of local colleges.

Heheheh...which is pretty much what 'Yote says any time people ask him where he's from...(And you can imagine with how fast HE talks how that comes out...)

what a ride inner thought of non violent rebellion outside dare to die stand and fight

Skinny Puppy's Tin Omen

and, of course, what the song is about: the shootings and riot.

You know, where the protests were and shooting was and oh, by the way, that song, and incidentally a school that's probably not half bad.

...My Da tells a lot of stories. Lots of them. My education via public school sucked, but MAN do I have awesome inhouse tutors =D

I read your previous blog on the 47 yo and it doesn't surprise me too much. I definitely remember Kent State. The picture of the girl grieving over the slain student's body is etched in my mind. I was appalled. I was angry. And I participated in a rally against the National Guard, which appalled and angered my parents.

Some people live in their own little world's, hon. They just don't get it.

A riot took place there and the riot police used more force than necessary and several students were killed.

Oh, it wasn't even the police. The Governor called out the National Guard. And they were already jumpy from other violent protests they'd quelled days before. It was a recipe for disaster.

Besides having 'Yote immediately come to mind? :)
The fact that they *still* riot every year on May 4th.
Every year.

(But *before* I met 'Yote? Yes, the words Kent State = "Kent State Shooting". And the moment I heard he was from Kent, I asked "You mean as in Kent State?" So yeah...)

T'was he, of course, who walked me around campus. And someone else, but now I can't remember who. But I remember, after we'd walked around in the rain and talked about it all, and I'd put my fingers in the bullet holes, and touched the bell, and sat in the pavilion, I just started to cry-- how senseless, how wrong, how stupid it had all been. And D.M. thanked me. For what? I asked. For understanding. For letting it get to you. For not brushing it off.

Oh, yes. It got to me.

Yep, that's my "bastard child of Abbie Hoffman and Jimmy Hoffa", bless his heart. Who doesn't stir shit up just to stir shit (or look tough, even though that's often the outward impression for those who aren't paying attention)...but because he feels things so very very deeply. *nods*

I think of 'home' and my 'wasted youth.'

Then I think of someone whos husband won't let them talk to me.

Then the shootings, and the spirit it gave the place.

Alright, it's not like anyone thought comes first, they come in a mob.
