I've been having a crushingly boring, empty day. Just being kind of sulky and pathetic, I'll admit. I took a bath, shaved my legs-- woohoo. How exciting. Grumpy. Gr.
And then I call Mom, who's up at Dad's office with my sister and her husband and the baby, and on a whim, my Mom hands the baby the phone, saying, "Say hi to Aunt Nikki!"
Those of you who despise children, stop reading.
My not-even-two-years-old niece not only knew exactly to whom she was speaking (she plays with cell phones as toys, usually when they're off), she immediately started saying, "Ca! Ca!" She was here a few weeks ago, saw all my cats, and was utterly enthralled. She chattered with me in babyspeak-- just on the edge of comprehensible-- for a few minutes, and then, when Mom asked for the phone back, said in a very clear voice, "Bye bye!"
I swear I got so excited I turned into damp-eyed mush. Her vocabulary has grown so much, and her communications skills are amazing for someone I still think of as a squalling, Churchill-faced football. It's astonishing to watch. And her voice has gotten so much clearer! She's got the vowel sounds down, and she's working on consonants.
This is something I've never experieced before-- the unfolding of human verbal skills-- so you'll have to forgive my utter astonishment at something just about everyone I know has already witnessed. Go, Sarah!
And then I check the Wench board, and in a thread about women we admire, someone put me on her list. Well, damn.
Not such a bad day after all.
