I refuse to wallow.
Nov. 4th, 2004 01:48 amI didn't watch any of the concession or victory speeches. I haven't read much on CNN or CBS.com. It's over? Fine. It's over.
So I just fifteen minutes ago joined the Planned Parenthood Action Fund. Immediately after, I joined the Sierra Club. When my paycheck comes in tomorrow, I'm going to try to join up with the Human Rights Campaign (gay, lesbian, and transgendered rights). I made my first New Year's resolution: that I will march on Washington, D.C. this year for some cause I hold dear: gay rights, abortion rights, women's rights. I'm wondering if I can make some kind of charity corset, with the proceeds going to support one of my causes. I'm sure there'll be other things I can do. I have my sights set on the mid-terms now.
I volunteered one night for the campaign, and I started and kept up the e-list for the Philadelphia Democratic Meet-Up. I don't think I did enough, unless berating my friends to go vote, and speaking up whenever I could counts for much. (Which, in Pennsylvania, may have helped. I don't know.)
There's a quote from The West Wing where Leo tells Jed, "Being in power means everyone else can take a seat for four years."
I will not sit down.

Charity Corset
Date: 2004-11-04 01:09 pm (UTC)So I'm going to be working on a charity auction quilt for an as-yet undecided charity - and I would love to get the corset makers I know in on a charity corset auction, ala Susan Sarandon's latest "Of Corsets for Charity" event, wherein models strutted a runway wearing corsets of her design and somebody else whose name escapes me - it's in People magazine this month. (the one with Wills and Harry on the cover...ROWR, but I digress)
Would you be in on that gig? We can choose what charities we'd like to donate proceeds to as a group (or pair, if it's just you and me, LOL)
Was considering approaching Delicious Corsets and a few others to see if they'd play along, too.
(btw, we already belong to the sierra club and planed parenthood - you can also get involved in your local DNC or other party-of-choice in your area, should you so choose, and be a precinct captain for your next local election...)

Date: 2004-11-04 01:34 pm (UTC)I've debated getting into local politics as a Ward Leader or the like, but I'm not sure I want to. I know someone who is, and I support the idea, I'm just not sure it's for me. I'm sure I'll think of it yet more as the months roll on!
Where do you live, anyway?
DC-ish
Date: 2004-11-04 02:22 pm (UTC)Wanna come have a sleepover one weekend to come, and we'll feed you and stuff and have other folks who are interested come brainstorm with us?
And when you hit the Mall for protests of any kind...

Date: 2004-11-04 01:25 pm (UTC)I am (not for the first time) impressed with your spirit... definitely pick a rally on the Mall, and let's go... I've only been to a few, but they're impressive when they happen! *grin*
I didn't mean to offend yesterday, btw, and nowhere did I say "Get over it." Getting over it is the last thing I hope the Kerry supporters do: I hope more of my friends take exactly this sort of active role this year, and for the next four. :)

Date: 2004-11-04 01:44 pm (UTC)I'm mad. I'm probably going to be mad for four years. But it's gonna be a constructive mad, dammit.
