I'm having problems with iChat, and I'm thinking it's a problem with Comcast. iChat seems to be the most sensitive, so to speak, to glitches in my internet service. Comcast hiccups, I get bounced off, then back on. I wouldn't even know it's happening if I didn't have iChat up.
Since last night, when I started trying to open iChat, I fail spectacularly. It stutters-- on/off/on/off, in rapid succession. So much so that after no more than three seconds or so, I get an error message that my account has been limited due to too much activity, and I have to wait before trying again.
So I can read email, I can surf, I can post- or so I'm hoping-- but I can't chat. I'm assuming this might have something to do with the way webpages sometimes stall indefinitely whilst loading. Off to spend a year on the phone with Comcast!
Woo.
ETA: They reset my modem, and I've restarted all three machines. I still get AIM and iChat error messages that I've tried to log on too many times, and must wait before trying again. I'm stumped.

Date: 2009-04-17 07:25 pm (UTC)I have kept track of the times when I have more or less issues with it, and I think it happens when there are a ton of people trying to use the same generalized bandwidth... So, if you're in a high use neighborhood where everyone uses Comcast for their internect connectivity (99% of my neighborhood has Comcast) - and it's a time of day when everyone is online - I end up with network drops every 30 seconds - you might have the same problem...
Comcast has no clue what the issue is and has confirmed that just about everyone in my neighborhood has connectivity through them, but they claim they have upgraded the service to our area so that we shouldn't see a degredation in signal due to high usage... but we do... and they're "investigating"...

iChat blows
Date: 2009-04-20 01:51 pm (UTC)It sounds like Comcast is maybe doing shady packet shaping. What happens with it if you plug in on somebody else's connection?
