I have computer.

I have internet.

I have SL.

I have two crashes in a row, now.

I guess maybe I do need 4 megs of RAM.

To run SL?

Yes.
Im running SL with six, and a very good video card. When I still was running 2GB ram it was MUCH harder.

Yeah. I was just in Dublin, and it was STILL like walking underwater with all those people there.

Some of it isn't memory. Some of it will just depend upon your processing power, video card, and how much damn bling (etc.) is around. ^.^ Folks who create stuff for SL are not video game designers, so we don't get the same optimizations that you would get, for instance, in WoW. Just can't happen without severely limiting the platform.

I don't get the appeal of Second Life. I have enough trouble dealing with my first one.

I don't get how everyone who doesn't get Second Life has enough trouble dealing with his or her first one. And I mean EVERYONE.

Good point. What I should have said was "for the most part, I have quite enough to interest, entertain and provide drama for me in my first life. Ysobelle, it seems to me that you also have enough excitement and - g-d knows drama - in your life that a whole other universe seems like overkill. What does Second Life do to enrich your mundane existence?"

It's simple, really.

You have GOT to see my SL ass. Utter perfection.

Heh. I mean, everything fits. I have the BEST hair. I own my own oak grove. I have a pavilion with a sitar. I have an oceanfront with rocks I made myself and the sound of the sea. I just went to the virtual Globe Theatre. I have a fountain. I have awesome friends. I can go dancing nonstop for hours and not get tired. I can explore anywhere. Do anything.

And, Jesus! I can FLY!

I was making a joke girlie... don't you mean gigs - or do you really mean megs?

I've been training silver-hair types to use the platform all week. It's been interesting to see their observations on "leave it to the geeks to develop a really amazing platform but to make it so resource intensive that we actually WANT to go back to SharePoint..."

Could you translate that for me?

...Hmm. Seems I'm becoming a geek translator:

Apparently [livejournal.com profile] helcat is responsible for getting older folks up to speed on Second Life. They are finding it an incredible system to use, however it is so hard on their computers (probably business-class computers, which tend to be lower powered and have a longer lifespan in the office than the typical home "gaming" system) that they would rather be using Microsoft's web-based collaboration and sharing software.

As a side note, I would like to add that SL was not designed to replace anything like SharePoint. I really think LL pushing this into business and making that a major focus is putting the cart before the horse. The system is way too buggy and requires more power than is typically available in the office for regular use as a business platform.

I am curious as to the context of [livejournal.com profile] helcat's training. For what do they intend to be using SL?

Our CEO is a big fan and wants to start running meetings in SL. I've said repeatedly this is not the best application of the platform and tried to steer it toward distance learning and distance event participation, but I'm hamstrung by the top-down directives in which my strategy advice is ignored despite being the org's social and virtual media strategist. :/

Meanwhile he's grossly misrepresented the amount of money we've spent on its development in the platform to the board. Eeeyikes.

BTW, I'm Helenn Indigo in there these days.

I've been training people older than 55 to use Second Life, and collectively they don't like it because it crashes, is slow, etc. The reason they wanted to see it in action is because they are hoping to find something better than Microsoft Sharepoint, but feel that the folks who developed SL in the first place were not trying to make it something anyone could access, or it wouldn't be so prone to fail.

Does that make more sense? :D
