And I was wondering something...if Chanukah is only for 8 nights, why are there nine candles on the Menorah?

Because one is the shamash ("helper" or "servant"), which is the candle we light first and with which we light the other candles!

I have a holiday-related question: in what kind of store would I find a dreidel? I ask because Meg really, REALLY wants to play the dreidel game. I have found menorahs and wrapping paper and many other Chanukah-related items, and I have a pile of gelt, but I can't find a dreidel anywhere. Is there some secret location where dreidels are sold?

Oh, boy. Well... I found a bunch of them in an old-fashioned toy store. Pretty little wooden ones. But they are, indeed, notoriously difficult to find outside a Judaica store. Do you have a synagogue near you or a Jewish Community Centre that might have a gift shop?

We made one out of ... paper, actually. With a pencil stuck through. It worked pretty well! (Well enough to play the game, at any rate.) My daughter was thrilled that we managed to make it happen. (She also liked the latkes.)

I saw wooden dreidels in the holiday decoration section at Kohl's last night. Hallmark stores sometimes have them, as well.

Yup, sort of. I only have show, no box office work until Boxing Day. So, I work about 4 hours, and it's (usually) routine.
About as relaxing as my life gets!
