Most of these photos were taken by the fabulous and lovely [livejournal.com profile] snugglyevil. It's a creepy, intriguing, sad place. A place of incredible contrasts: the violence of crime, and the peace of solitude. The angry men jailed there, and the little girl born to the warden's family. The tiny cells, and the massive walls. The hopelessness of incarceration, and the hopefulness of release. Light and dark in so many ways.

It is SUCH an amazing building, with such an incredible history.

The fact that it wasn't meant to be a hopeless place - it was meant to be a better way to deal with criminals, to give people quiet time to reflect on their wrongdoing, to learn a trade if need be, and to be achieve freedom in a matter of months.

It all went so horribly wrong. :/

Parts of it did, and parts of it worked well, but in the end, it became just another victim of the American penal system. And our culture of violence. And the "War on Drugs." And its own age.

Hell, there's a whole list.
