I'm listening to the news this morning, and it's like a warm, happy shower: they keep talking about things like, "President-Elect Obama will...." and "Obama plans to...." G-d, it's just...G-d.

The thought of being able to follow politics again, and debate things, and know that there will be things I disagree with, but things I heartily support about the new administration...I've honestly forgotten what that's like. Liberals and Democrats in this country have been vilified for so long we've just developed a siege mentality.

I said last night that Democrats in this country have been the Philadelphia sports fans of politics. We spent a lot of the last two years thinking, "Okay, how are we going to lose this one?" Now we've all won the World Series and we're a bit bewildered.

But as long as we don't knock over a luggage store, we'll be just fine.

Ha! We drove by that luggage store last night on our way home, with people dancing in the street around us... but destruction was the furthest thing from anyone's mind! What an amazing night!

(it still pisses me off to read conservative blogs though, so I'm avoiding them for the time being, choosing to revel in this dream a while longer, unmolested.)

Conservatives are going to bemoan the imminent destruction of our country for quite some time. They will tell us that Obama has no experience, that he is reckless and the most liberal Senator America has ever seen (because, apparently, they have forgotten Paul Wellstone, and never met Dennis Kucinich), that his policies will lead to increasing terrorist attacks and a worsening economy, and the warping of our rights across the board. In other words, they're going to have to learn to live with the fear and disgust so many of us have suffered with for eight years.

I hope, I devoutly hope, that President Obama is the kind of man whose intelligence and vision can win over such people, and that they will come to see him for the uplifting, unifying President I truly think he will be.

And if they can't, I must say to them, "Suck it up, buds. It's our turn now! WOOT!"

I swear, I've forgotten what it's like to feel positive about my government. This is like putting on a coat I haven't worn in eight years and finding out it still fits.

I'm just glad that I will be able to listen a presidential press conference again. For eight years I have had to lunge for the off button whenever a Presidential address or press conference was on.
