And one more thing.
Nov. 4th, 2008 03:37 amI don't like abortions. I wish to G-d we lived in a world where women only got pregnant when they wanted and could care for babies, where they had stable homes and sufficient money and people to help and support them. I really do. But we don't live in that world. We live in a world where accidents happen, where women get raped, where condoms break and pills fail, where "I promise I'll always love you" sometimes means "Who are you again?", where a family is stretched to the limit with three kids and four will break them.
How can you tell me that because I see that spectrum of greys, because I have the compassion to understand that what might not be a choice for me is the only choice for someone else, that I am immoral? That my empathy and understanding are a spiritual flaw? That I'm wrong for saying, "I support you, whatever you choose?"
I said those very words to someone today, as I've said them to her for the last three weeks. She was in a terrible position, and had a hard choice to make. I'm her friend, and I love her, and I told her I'd stand behind her no matter what she did-- because it's HER life, and HER choice. And I don't get to make those decisions-- whatever they may be. And I'm her friend. How could someone who has never met her, knows nothing about her, will never be touched in the slightest by her actions say they have the right to tell her what to do?
You think I'm immoral because I'll vote for a candidate who understands that kind of compassion? You think I should vote for someone who says, "No, I know better than you what you should do with your life, and if you try to make the best choice for you and your family, I'll see you get punished"?
I live in a country that allows me the freedom to live as a thinking, functioning, intelligent adult, without the fetters of anyone's religion weighing me down. My own religion, in fact, tells me that sometimes, abortion is the only moral choice a woman can make. How can you-- how dare you-- tell me that I am immoral? How dare you judge me? How dare you make yourself judge and jury over my thoughts?
You say that there's only one choice I can make. Well. I suppose you're right. And I'll make that choice first thing in the morning.

Date: 2008-11-04 02:03 pm (UTC)I'm still trying to figure out why for a lot of people, abortion is a bigger issue than say, the economy or health care or international relations. ::shrug::
Off to vote. Don't stress too much today as you watch the results come in! <3

Date: 2008-11-04 02:42 pm (UTC)Education can go a long way in preventing many pregnancies in the first place, and I'm not talking about preaching abstinence. Honest, forthright education about contraceptives, STD's, sexual intercourse, and pregnancy. All of the choices and options available, along with the pros and cons of each, presented in an intelligent, unbiased matter.
And the reminder that just because someone is pro-choice does NOT make them pro-abortion. It just means that should we find ourselves pregnant, we have another option that is hopefully still safe and legal. It doesn't mean we'll automatically choose it.
Now I need to go get dressed so I can vote before work. WooHoo!!

Date: 2008-11-04 07:03 pm (UTC)And let's remember that it's those pro-life folk that have also made it more difficult to grant that education and contraceptives to the most vulnerable population. So on both ends, we're getting screwed.
