A realisation.
Aug. 28th, 2008 02:33 amIt's simple, really.
I don't have a problem with Republicans, per se. I mean, obviously, I do, politically, but that's not where my antagonism lies. It's with stupid people. The ones who proudly say they don't read or research, they just "know in their hearts." Because all too often, that means they've listened to some NeoCon pundit spewing lies and spin and crap that used to be a fact long ago, before someone put it in a blender and turned it into pure bile. These are the people who believe Michelle Obama hates whites. That Barack Obama is a Muslim. That there were weapons of mass destruction. That the only good Muslim is a dead Muslim, and that all Muslims are out to kill us. And most of them will look you dead in the eye and tell you they don't read "those liberal newspapers." In other words, anything but avowedly right-wing websites and papers. And this if they read anything at all.
I don't agree with it, but I understand why the Founding Fathers put so many strictures on who could vote and who couldn't. They were politically impassioned men. They devoted their lives to carving a country out of blood and dirt. They argued for days over words and phrases and the least nuance of language. And then they knew they'd have to turn their creation over to people who were swayed by the least rumours and superstition and lies. People of no education and little reason.
As a country, we'll always survive. At least, I'm pretty sure we will. But at this point, I've finally lived enough to be able to look back and say that I can see what this administration has done to my country and to my life, and that I was far, far better off before it came to power. I lived better, I wasn't afraid for my rights, and I didn't have to see people who devoutly believe things up to and including that the world is 6,000 years old demanding their right to teach such things in science classes.
I have hope, yes. But I'm also deeply, deeply afraid.

They are called Oil Wells.
Oil is a weapon of mass destruction, we will massively destroy you for your oil..
