Date: 2008-07-06 01:08 am (UTC)We appear to be acquiring said episode currently. Will let you know when I've watched it. (And I'm -still- three episodes behind, although I did finally manage to watch Silence in the Library and Forest of the Dead.)
We probably ought to catch up on Torchwood, too.

Date: 2008-07-06 01:29 am (UTC)I loved Captain Jack in the Dr Who episodes, but the commercials for the Torchwood series just didn't convince me that it was worth watching.
However, several friends have watched it and loved it, so now I'm willing to give it a try.

Date: 2008-07-06 05:11 pm (UTC)The next shot is of the Doctor, standing over her, hands characteristically in pockets, looking grim and thoughtful, as Wilf slowly backs out of the room.
Next shot, the Doctor is sitting on the sofa downstairs in the parlour, while Sylvia and Wilf crowd the loveseat, The Doctor explains to them that Donna, for a few moments, held a Time Lord consciousness in her head, and no human can withstand that. To save her life, he had to erase every memory of himself, their travels, the TARDIS, everything. Wilf sadly and angrily counters that Donna was a better person when she was with the Doctor. Sylvia snaps, "That's not true!" But Wilf stands up to her and insists that it is. The Doctor assures them that there are people living in the light who owe their lives to Donna, and whole races that will sing of her forever. And that for one, shining moment, Donna Noble was the most important person in the whole Universe.
"She still is," says Sylvia. "She's my daughter."
"Well maybe you should tell her that once in a while," snaps the Doctor.
Suddenly, the door opens, and Donna bursts in, already going a mile a minute with her cell phone in her hand, chattering about how she was asleep in bed fully dressed like a kid, and how many texts she's gotten from her friends with rubbish stories. Sylvia introduces her, and the Doctor stands, shaking her hand, and without missing a beat introducing himself as "John Smith." Donna is entirely dismissive, already turning away. Sylvia, still angry at being reprimanded, insists Mr. Smith was just leaving.
In the kitchen, she is loud and shrill, gossiping on the phone like the Donna of old, bustling around the kitchen. The Doctor enters from the rear door, watches her half a moment, then calls out to her.
"Donna? I'm just going."
"Yeah," she replies, almost not turning around. He looks at her one final moment, and exits.
Wilf sees him to the door, where the both pause, looking at the torrential rain that's just started. The Doctor remarks that there'll be plenty of rain, with all the atmospheric disturbances the Earth's just been through. "Still, it'll pass, " he muses. "Everything does."
Wilf thanks him for everything, and the Doctor steps out.
But Wilf calls to him again. "But Doctor, what about you? Who've you got? I mean, all your friends?"
The Doctor turns, his suit darkening in the pouring rain. "They've all got someone else. Still, that's fine." He shrugs. "I'm fine."
"I'll watch out for you, Sir," Wilf promises.
"You can't ever tell her!" the Doctor warns sternly.
"No, no. But every night, Doctor, when it gets dark, and the stars come out, I'll look up. On her behalf, I'll look up at the sky. And think of you."
The Doctor, rain running down his face, simply says, "Thank you," and turns away to the TARDIS.
Wilf, tears in his eyes, watches a moment, then snaps to attention and salutes, as the TARDIS fades away in the rain. Then he goes inside, and locks the door.
Alone, the Doctor walks around the glowing console of the TARDIS. He unbuttons his soaking jacket and tosses it onto the controls, watching the engine rise and fall. Quietly, he wanders to the other side, and leans heavily on the boards, staring at nothing.
Tight shot on his face.
Cue end theme.

Date: 2008-07-06 05:42 pm (UTC)Also, how will she feel living her life with someone who is, essentially, a limited Doctor? He may be as brilliant, he may be as clever, but part of what she loved was the travelling, the adventure. Now they're both stuck on earth. I'm going to assume they both go to work for Torchwood, but instead of zipping around the Universe, she's now stuck with "the one adventure (the Doctor) could never have" shoved down her throat: paying bills, sorting the mortgage, buying groceries....
I see the advantage in that while the Doctor implied that needing Rose was very much part of him, he could live on without her, so leaving the Double with her gave her the one thing he couldn't give: someone who could truly need and value her. I imagine we're supposed to believe that after some period of adjustment, they live happily ever after. That'd be great.
But Rose isn't a fairy-tale princess, to have the Prince decide it all for her. She should have made her own happy ending.
