Pretty!

Just watched Elizabeth: The Golden Age. I think it had little to do with history, but was very, very pretty. I'm going to have to crack open my Elizabeth biography in addition to The Diamond Age. Sometimes I wish I could just absorb books. If only the act of reading weren't such an actual pleasure....

I was sorry to see an absence of cartwheel farthingales. I would have loved to have seen what a modern film would have made of them. And I was also sorry to hear Mary Queen of Scots with a Scots accent. I caught a glimpse of Samantha Morton in a preview for Emma earlier this evening as Harriet Smith-- thank G-d, or I would have spent two hours saying, "Dammit, where have I seen her???" I liked that they had her in red for her beheading-- though they left out the other detail that her little dog ran out from under her skirts and lapped her blood. Or that her head apparently kept speaking after it left her body.

Mm. And I deliberately watched some of the extras so I wouldn't be thinking of the creepy parts before bed. Alas.

I'm looking forward to The Other Bolyn Girl for the costumes.

I usually keep a computer on when we're watching tv or dvds. That way, when I get one of those "where HAVE I seen that person" moments I can just IMDB for the answer. It's handy, because otherwise I can't settle back into whatever I'm currently watching.

(ps- did you know I live just down the road a piece from Margo Anderson?)

i think the only time i've seen cartwhl. 'gales is in the BBC version of Elizabeth I that was done in the 70's. But the Armada was in 1588, so no cartwheels there. I haven't seen the movie, does it go later than this?

Zomg. I was just talking to mom about this movie and how it bothered me that Mary had a Scottish accent.
