So now that I've seen the new Torchwood-- ROWR!-- I can see I'm going to have to go back and get some Doctor Who episodes to fill in. I never watched the latter much, I'm afraid. Did they cover where Jack has been all this time?

Yes, in the last few episodes of (new) Season Three.

Well, actually, you need to see Season One (the one with Christopher Eccleston) to get the full Jack backstory as far as his association with the Doctor goes, and why he's all immortal and whatnot. So far as I know, Jack's complete backstory still isn't all filled in!

I can already tell I'm going to be spending more money at Best Buy.

Second the recommendation to start with Season One of New Who, if you want to understand Jack.

Doctor Who is my favorite TV show now. It doesn't hurt that Ten is a skinny Scotsman in a suit. :-)

His story is still being filled in. I have lots more if you need to feed the addiction.
