I love my Mummers. Love the String Bands. Such a weird tradition to anyone outside of Philly-- and to many inside. And so creative. Best of all? These guys are all plumbers and teachers and carpenters and lawyers and IT guys and nurses and admin assistants and you-name-it. But for seven minutes every year, they're high-dollar-production-number stars. They're kicking ass this year-- even Pennsport String Band, in its first year. And I'm seeing so many women! A woman as captain, too.

Love. LOVE.

They've come such a long way. Its so nice to see some traditions stay fast and move forward at the same time. ;)

I know one club had it's warehouse burned to the ground this past year. I was so sad to hear it, they put so much money and effort into their shows!!

I love it when the news crews get "sneak peeks" and it's like, some sort of all-man sweatshop with these so. philly italian firefighters bent over rows of sewing machines and surrounded by football field's worth of sequins and satins and *maribou*...lmao. only in philly :)

Dangit! I slept in (Oh, I'll be honest, I was hung over...bah...) and COMPLETELY missed it! I remember seeing the Mummer's parade YEARS ago and thinking how cool it was, and I got excited because I knew it would get coverage as a local event.

I don't suppose they rebroadcast or put it up on the Web anywhere? *hopeful look*

It's still on, they were delayed by weather 3 hours.
They are doing a 'best of' recap Sunday night on chan 17.
On the club (Greater Kensington, I think)that had the fire; They went up the street and they had mentioned how folks had sent donations from all across the country for them.
It was a good show, I still don't like the fancies indoors, but the strings looked great. Also, [livejournal.com profile] magnusdiridian went up the steet the first time as captain of Landi comics. Yes, It was a good parade.

Yeah-- the Fanices are juuuust finishing now. I think Vikings sewed it up. Again.

String Bands rocked this year. Completely. That was FUN! One of these days I'm gonna have to see if any of them need some extra sewing help.

It's not New Year's Day without at least 10 minutes of Mummers!
I got in about 1/2 hour, but I'm happy.

The year I moved to the Pittsburgh area with Jen was the first New Year's Day without the Mummer's Parade. It was so weird. The funniest part was that I didn't know at the time that it was regional, so when I finally realized why my New Year's Day felt strange and brought the lack of Mummers up to Jen, she just looked at me completely uncomprehending! Yay, Mummers! Would that I could watch your feathery fluffiness and brassy notes as I did growing up...

Uh, that is to say "watch your feathery fluffiness and HEAR your brassy notes..."
