My family, bless them, thinks I need to get out of the house more. To this end, my dad says he'll spring for a class. Any class. I'm going through online catalogues now, and I'm literally kid-in-a-candy-store overwhelmed. Photoshop? Glassblowing? Swordfighting?

So what would YOU do? And if you have an idea what I should do, tell me! And tell me where it's offered, too.

I would recommend looking at classes at Moore. Lots of fashion/arts oriented stuff that could help you with your corset, etc. work.

See, I looked at their stuff, and nothing really jumped out at me. I'm gonna have to look again.

I'd take swordfighting, but I'm too gimpy nowadays. You have an artistic streak in you a mile wide, so glass blowing might be the way to go.

I know, I'm soo tempted both ways. Argh!

Somehow...the vision of you trying to look manacing with a sword...amuses me. Photography...mmmmmmm. Could always take theater art design and laugh at their stupidity. heehee Learning lampwork might be pretty cool. or gemology.

I was pretty kickass with a broadsword. And apparently, I'm pretty sexy with a rapier.

Photoshop.. This way you can edit your corset pics too!

I was seriously considering that. Seeeeeriously.

Oooh...glassblowing looks like fun.

I've always wanted to learn to fence, though.

Sculpture or pottery classes would excite me too

I've taken classes at Hot Soup Studios in Philly, and they're really good, and the fees aren't *too* bad, considering materials are included....http://www.hotsoupstudio.com/

Yeah, I was looking at them! Verrry tempting. I love explaining how the glass we have at the store is made-- cos I've asked the artists when we see them, and watched a video or two from the companies.

I have a friend who makes glass beads. Maybe we can arrange for you to come down sometime and have a lesson?

Oh, YES! Yes, PLEASE! I'd LOVE that!!!

She's coming over NY Day for a marathon gaming session. I'll talk to her about it then and see what she says.

But you have to do it at my house so she can teach me too. :-)

Well, if you decide on the sword fighting, we know a teacher. Dave (The Old Celt) at Live Steel Fight Acadamy, http://www.livesteelfightacademy.com/

You know him? That's fabulous! I was looking at their website. Where the hell is Pottstown, though?

Yes, sweetie, Dave is great, he's the one that runs the demonstations that are often up by the elephant at celtic fling, or in the basement at the mid-winter festival (which is in mid-february). Yes, he is a rennie. Pottstown would be a bit of a drive, about an hour depending on traffic, 1 1/2 hours. Take 76 west to 422 west (close to KoP mall), then follow 422 west for about a 1/2 hour.

If it was me I would look for a class teaching the Japanese Tea Ceremony (Chado, I think?) It emphasizes ritual and a spareness of ornament and movement yet produces a great psychological impact.
The french draw spirals and curves and fleur de lis. The Japanese draw a straight line. Then Hello Kitty and anime invade the earth. Simpler is better sometimes. :)
(That is to say...one could carry over the lessons learned in the tea ceremony to every day applications, art and costume design not withstanding.)

You're a freak. You know that, right?

It's not a bad idea. Hm.

With anybody else I would consider being offended. From you, I know it's a synonym for "interesting". At least that's what I've decided. :)

A cooking class might not be bad either. Learn to cook Chinese or Thai or Indian or French..... Just a thought. :)

From: [identity profile] ysobelle.livejournal.com
Oh, hell yeah. What, like I'm not?

And yeah, I was considering a cooking class, too. But I hadn't thought about Thai. Mmmm!

Thai food is good for the liver. I don't know how, but I know mine feels pretty good after I've had green curry so by proxy it MUST be. You'd just have to get used to cooking with fish sauce a lot. The smell can be a wee tinge unnerving. >.

How about taking something totally useless but utterly fascinating? You know, doing something with no practical aspect but that would challenge your mind and expand your horizons and get you "out of the box" completely.

Just a thought! (From someone who is trying to get her mother to take "introduction to curling"!)

Whatever you decide... enjoy!!!

From: [identity profile] ysobelle.livejournal.com
Yah. Hmm. But seriously-- curling?! How-- why-- what?

I might take a poetry workshop, just for the company.

You're pretty damned good already. Yeah-- company's nice. Some feedback, some new input.

I've got no idea where you'd take it, but given carte blanche like that, I'd take hang gliding lessons!

BWAHAHAHAHAHAA!!!!!

I'd vomit all over the instructor, I swear. Think it'd atomise before it hit some poor schlub on the ground?

Dude.

He said ANY class? That's a free ticket to a lecture class at the V&A, right? :)

I want desperately to assimilate more dancers, so I vote you go take American Tribal Style Belly Dance. No, really. I think you'd love it. :)

(Eyes rolling back in ecstacy) Oh, yeah! Though if he pays for the class, I still have to get over there and live for a few months. Not that I'd MIND, but...oh, man...!

I like the bellydance idea, too. I was thinking of Rachel Brice last night, matter of fact!

If you learned belly dance, you could learn about COSTUMING for belly dance, and the different styles...cabaret, tribal, etc..... That's a lot of very pretty, very shiny things you could be sewing! AND dancing in! (And it isn't like gals wouldn't flock to someone that can make a good outfit!)
