Best. Gift. Ever.
Dec. 24th, 2007 08:31 amWhen 9/11 happened. I had a cousin in Manhattan. Fabulous guy: he knew a lot about the Underberger side of the family and its history, and even used to manage Martha Wash, the former Weathergirl ("It's Raining Men," and later, the woman in "Ride on Time," that dancefloor favourite). But his apartment was right across from the towers. As the dust and debris and everything else settled, no one could find him. We all feared the worst. Was he in the towers? Was he walking by? Was he hurt? We heard a rumour another relative had seen him, but that was it. We couldn't find him, and we didn't hear a word from him. He never called, his old number didn't work, we only had a rumour someone had even talked to him, and web searches turned up nothing for six years. Just two days ago, I mentioned in the store that we still wondered, and worried.
Yesterday, my sister Susan calls me as I'm coming back from break. She's breathless and excited. "You're never gonna guess who just called me!" Call me crazy-- which I am-- but I knew.
Carl has pretty much been through hell. He saw the planes hit the towers, and it understandably really fucked him up. Add to that that he lost everything-- the apartment was right across the street-- and developed some pretty severe breathing problems and other health problems, and it makes some measure of sense as to why he'd "gone underground," as he put it. But he's got a new job now, and a new partner, the latter of whom convinced him to call us at long last.
Susan-- and Dad, who also talked to him-- said he'd been thinking we'd hate him for disappearing, and we'd curse him out for it. Are you kidding? She told him I'd just been talking about him, and he couldn't believe it. But he's coming down in a couple of weeks, and we'll get to see him. Finally. We're such a small family to begin with, this is just the most ass-kicking, make-the-year news I've had in ages. I can't wait to see him. Happy New Year!

Date: 2007-12-24 02:17 pm (UTC)Totally unrelated, but do you know what the current bid for your Terrors corset and skirt is at? I've got a bid in and don't want to lose it, but can't go a lot higher, either.

Date: 2007-12-24 03:06 pm (UTC)This reminds us that there are still casualties of the attack (and others) and though it may take time, they CAN be recovered. With your permission, I intend to tell this story for Christmas, I think it is perfectly suited. Congratulations to all of you, my heart is full, schmooches!
