You know that ridiculous Creation Museum? The one that purports to explain why evolution is a myth? Some guy took a bunch of photos, and started a forum for folks to make LOLCAT macros out of them.

Absolutely hysterical. Do not miss.

:P Bad nikki. Hannakah Harry isnt coming to visit you next year either :P

but seriously, why did they all use such ridiculous spelling? was that the point? am I missing the point? I mean, its not like you could really make it seem stupider?

Lolcat macros are an art unto themselves. The bad spelling started as the supposed way cats would spell, if they could, you know, write in the first place. Believe it or not, it's a pretty funny-- ahem-- evolution of a internet phenom.

"Lolcats are images combining photographs of animals, most frequently cats, with a humorous and idiosyncratic caption in broken English referred to as Kitty Pidgin[1] or Kitteh. The meme originated in the 4chan imageboards as the Caturday internet phenomenon.[2] The name "lolcat" is a compound word of "lol" and "cat".[3][4] The phenomenon is also referred to as cat macros.[5] Lolcats are created for photo sharing imageboards and other internet forums. Lolcats are similar to other anthropomorphic animal-based image macros such as the O RLY? owl[6], and the term is often used as a catchall for not only images depicting cats, but also animals, humans, and in some cases even the absence of such creatures.
The term lolcat gained national attention in the United States when it was covered by Time magazine,[7] which wrote that non-commercialized phenomena of the sort are increasingly rare, stating that lolcats have "a distinctly old-school, early 1990s, Usenet feel to [them]." The superimposed text is assumed to be uttered by the cat in the photograph. There are parallels between the language used in lolcats and baby talk, which owners of cats often use when talking to them."

Take a quick look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lolcats . It's weirdly hysterical.

See, I don't really get lolcats. They mostly irritate me. The kitty ones...well, maybe. Sometimes. This thing at the creation museum? The lolcreashuns? I was so irritated by them I couldn't look past the first three or four. I went and looked at the originals and almost had an orgasmic sense of relief.

But it's as Carl would say--an evolution of language. lol used to be meaningless until it became shorthand. The first time I thought something was funny and thought "lol," i knew we were in trouble.

I think, at least in this case, part of the humour is that it's so badly written. It's stupid on top of stupid, with a garnish of dumb. Much like the museum itself.

But you're an editor, so don't be hard on yourself: of COURSE it makes you nuts!

Definitely make sure to read the original report of his visit to the Creation Museum, too. There's the writeup and the photographic report, from which all the lolcreashuns were made...

I came across in the comments on his Flickr photos the link to the list of scientists who actually wholeheartedly believe in Creationism. Like this ass:

Yes, the world was created in 6, 24-hour days, and there was a mighty flood, DESPITE ALL OF THE PALEONTOLOGICAL EVIDENCE AGAINST THAT. Ass. Complete ass.

Against my better judgement, those people make me angry. And they frighten me for the future, y'know? If it didn't have anything to do with religion, we'd laugh them out of town. But because it's religion, we start murmuring about tolerance and rights. Which I'm all for, of course, but not when it's promoting DEAD-WRONGNESS.

Gah.

From: [identity profile] tempest-gypsy.livejournal.com
It's a piece from a larger picture, sort of gothic revival style. A woman's hand holding a book with pages falling out. This icon is by the same artist. I have some of the full pieces saved on the hard drive at home.

You want to see the whole thing?
