I found the closed-captioning option on the TV itself. So I watched my Jane Eyre again. I think that's five times, now? No, four. I also, yesterday, watched the 1996 version Bux sent me-- the version with Charlotte Gainsbourg and William Hurt. Unsurprisingly, given my history of odd loyalties, I didn't like it as much. Not at all. It was very distracting to have a Jane with a slight French accent. And while she's become quite a stunner these days, in her youth, she had a lower jaw and chin longer than le Tour de France. Also, though it was directed by Franco Zefferelli, I have to admit I found the cinematography somewhat lackluster, and the tension between the two romantic leads just fell completely flat for me. Zip. Interesting to see Haddon Hall as Thornfield again. Also interesting to muse on how camera techniques have changed in ten years: no one uses such long, static shots any more.

At any rate, the toile corset is cut and fully pinned, loops and all. Thank G-d. All in all, though the day started with me wanting to tear my hair out, it got much better later on. [livejournal.com profile] kylecassidy, you're a god amongst men. Phee, Artos, and the minis are wonders of creation. And I have a Pocket Pirate coming to see me! And a [livejournal.com profile] dansr! And a trip to the Philadelphia Museum of Art's new(ish) Perelman Building to see the Costume and Textiles exhibit.

And best of all, when Spring comes and I have a bit more money, I'm going to London. And possibly taking Ryan with me. She's completely over the moon at the prospect, but I swear between now and then, I'll be kicking her ass to get her to bring her grades up. I'm not going to pull the "If you don't bring up your GPA, no trip!" thing. But I WILL point out that if we're going to see some schools over there, they won't even look at her with a low GPA. I also got her to look at New College. She's sure she can't get in. I think otherwise. We shall see. It's a toss-up for her, right now, between being a pastry chef and a photographer. Not, of course, that they're mutually exclusive.

I'm making lists of all the things I want to see whilst there. Haddon Hall's on the list, now. I'm not sure I want to go all the way up into Yorkshire to see the Brontes' house, but I'm tempted. Todd's said he wouldn't mind if I came over for two weeks. Two weeks in England! Well, we shall see.

Dont I know it. I spent 15months being a currency exchange bitch for Amex over at the K of P Plaza. I was amused when people were actualy surprised by the crappy exchange rate. Our money isnt worth as much in too many places anymore.

Still...start saving now and may have the 20quid to give her for a tshirt. LOL

I have to drop by to say you should absolutely go to Yorkshire to see the Bronte's house! The couch where Emily died is still in the little parlour and (with my imagination) I could almost hear her breathe in the stillness. To see their paintings of nature, and when I was there, there was an exhibit with Charlotte's wedding dress and bonnet in a case. And you can walk to the waterfall where they used to sit and write... and climb over the stiles.

Oh do go!

I did some map-checking-- I'm even more tempted, now! Hey, if I'm there long enough, why not, right?

(Waves!)
