09/07: Fifty kilos of mustard for Pieter Weening
Nick Nuyens was given 250 kilos of butter, because he was the last Belgian to pass the border of the Belgian town of Diksmuide. Fifty Belgians surprised Pieter Weening (picture) at the riders' hotel of the Rabo cycling team on Monday night. They came to proclaim him their hero of the day because he was the last rider to have left their city of Zeele.
The enthusiastic Belgians presented to Weening a stained plate of Zeele, which had been made for this occasion under the authority of the mayor, a hip flask of jenever and…..a gift voucher for fifty kilos of mustard. And the Frisian had a pee break to thank for all this. It caused him to momentarily lose contact with the pack and was, therefore, the last to pass the virtual stripe of the Zeelenaren, who, at the Rabo hotel, were clearly at he end of their party tether.
The butter is going to be sold by auction. Nuyens can use the profit that is made for a good cause. It is remains unclear what is going to happen to Weening's mustard.
