I just finished Lian Hearn's "The Harsh Cry of the Heron: The Last Tale of the Otori."

I wish to G-d I'd never read it.

The first three books were utterly brilliant. And so was this one. But the trilogy, which I devoured on my London trip, ended with a sense of cautious, fragile hope. I should have known better. The style is spare, and beautifully cool and balanced, much like the mythic feudal Japan in which it's set-- but it's also inexorable and tragic. I knew-- knew-- there was no way it could end well. And, of course, I cried.

This is also why I never developed my taste for opera.
