Yay! I think.
May. 2nd, 2007 04:45 amMy birthday went off pretty well, all things considered. I spent it working, of course, but I had some nice company Saturday night, and oh-G-d-amazing food from
gypsybandit Catering.
snugglyevil was there.
chainmailbill, that rock star, stopped by after escaping his adoring fans.
foxglove_8778 arrived bleeding-edge-fashionably late.
sjbpharmd came, with his lovely amour, Kate. (Thank you again for the gc-- it'll be unbelievably useful.) Seriously-- you have nooo idea.) We even got Kate in a corset, and she now understands the allure thereof.
hughcasey, you and Deni were missed. But lest ye think it was all play and no work, after the food, Phee and I cut her skirt. Once everyone had gone or fallen asleep, I finished the skirt and most of her corset. Like I say all the time now, I no longer have time off: I only have time I should be working but am not. And my boss is a bitch.
Sunday's glorious weather was enjoyed in the company of
foxglove_8778, and I was reminded, sadly, how few times we'll get to wander the city now she's moving. We brunched at world famous Bob's Diner, possibly the planet's only diner in an actual graveyard. I showed her Manayunk, followed by a detour through Kensington. After she left-- leaving behind the gift of some pretty darn amazing venison/buffalo chili, I gifted myself with a nap, followed by some work, followed by a sleep. Monday brought
surlywench and her sewing machine, and calls from serenading friends to wish me a joyous natal day. Some work actually DID get done, too. I got the pattern for Queen Mab's corset scanned and emailed to
fondor, thankfully. Apologies again, Jay. This morning, it was get-up-and-do-it-all-again, of course, but after dropping
surlywench at the train, I detoured to my parents' house to pick up the mysterious birthday present they hinted about.
Years ago, I dated a young man who shared with me a book he himself had just been given by his father. It was full of exquisite, unbelievably lifelike, vivid watercolours depicting, as the title says, Daily Life in Holland in the Year 1566. He fell asleep mid-sentence, but I stayed awake poring over the book, entranced, and wondering if I could make it out of the house with said tome before he awoke and hunted me down. Sadly, of course, the book had been out of print a couple of years already by that point, and it certainly hasn't been reprinted since. I mentioned it to my parents when I took them to Wegman's a few weeks ago, and showed it to them on my Treo, but as I said to Dad today, "You can't remember the names of people I've been hanging out with for years! How did you remember this?!" "I have my ways, " he responded.
It's one of the most amazing books ever for costume or lifestyle research. Unbelieveable. I'm so happy I could spit. Except that it's now time for me to all but fall asleep mid-sentence, as I have another long day tomorrow, my last full workday before Fairie Fest. Ah-- and thank G-d I called to confirm my hotel reservation at the Hampton there, as they had absolutely no record whatsoever of me. Thank G-d again that they had room, still.
This time last year, I was in London. This year looks to be almost as much of an adventure!

Date: 2007-05-02 11:19 am (UTC)We're sorry that we couldn't make it, but after the last two weeks going non-stop, Deni really needed a weekend break, where we just did nothing (I still had to shoot my film on Sunday, but Deni didn't have to come out with me for that).
I do want to get together soon, though, because you're kewl people!
