(But don't worry, this is mostly rhetorical.)

I went out to Fresh Fields today and bought good-for-me stuff. Organic veggies and fruits, cheeses, and yogurts. Organic steak and chicken and stir-fry veggie packs. Alllll kinds o' no-cows-with-three-heads-for-me-thank-you yummies. Not a massive amount-- my fridge isn't fully stocked by any means, really. I bought less than I'd get on a normal shopping trip.

And got whacked with a total of $145.

Why is eating the way we ate before there were ATMs and E Pluribus Unum so freakin' expensive? Why does it cost so much to eat healthily?

Sigh.

Three words

For the same reason that T-shirt #1 from The Gap is $20, while T-shirt #2 from (insert foofoo designer label here) is $200. You pay for the Wow-That's-So-Cool Factor.

No,
Big fuck ass no! You are paying for a real farmer growing real food with attention paid to it. Without chemicals, and pesticides, farming is a significantly more labor intensive task than you might think. Also the scale is much different. There are several websites that you can research this. Check this out on www.nofa.org and other places.

It always cost so much to eat - it's just that they didn't have the cheap crappy alternatives before.
