Has anyone ever used a produce delivery service? Or even a grocery delivery service? It's been suggested I eat more organic fruits and veggies, and my main problem is I buy them, subconsciously think, "Well, if I don't use them, I don't have to buy more," and never use them. I'm thinking if I have a steady source, I'd you know, EAT THEM.

http://www.suburbanorganics.com/ looks good. As does http://www.doortodoororganics.com/ . Anyone have any input?

Yep. In NYC it's Fresh Direct and YourGrocer, but yeah. Also, there's been talk of looking into our local organic food co-op as well.

But do you use them yourself? Does it work out for you?

Yeah. Well it's very convenient for certain things. First of all NYC runs on delivery services for damned near everything. You can get anything delivered here. But it's especially nice for a) large bulky things and b) perishables, because they guarantee they'll be fresh when they arrive, and you're not spending your time lugging shit around in your car or public transport.

freshdirect.com is the website, and yourgrocer.com, too. Check it out, and see how it works. :)

Shop-Rite has added an online service where you can either pick up or have your groceries delivered.

My mom gets her groceries delivered by Genaurdi's (she orders online and they bring it). She loves it, and it has been a real lifesaver as she doesn't always have the energy to shop herself.

She's only had two issues with it, neither of which is a deal-breaker for her.

1. She's very picky about meat cuts (size, fattiness, etc.) and she doesn't always like what they chose.

2. You can specify whether you are willing to accept a substitution if something is out, and she says that very rarely they will pick an odd, seemingly unrelated substitution item.

On the plus side, though. She said the produce is always great and if they ever make a mistake or a problem, they are quick about sending the driver to correct it.

I checked them, and wouldn't you know, they won't deliver here. First no sushi delivery, now THIS!

And I'm verrrry picky, too. I grok your mom's dilemma.

Oh! Y'know, I went to look for their site last night, got distracted, and didn't go back. Thanks for the reminder!

I would go with a CSA with a local pick-up. I would wonder about the added costs of delivery, as if organic isn't pricey enough.

I met some folks from door-to-door organics at a local earth day fair where they had a table and fruit out and asked them questions about their service specifically with you in mind, not having realized/remembered that you had actually mentioned them.

I personally see it as a matter of cost vs. convenience.. if it's cost effective and comparable to use them vs. a trip to the supermarket, then why not?
