So I think I want a Maxtor One-Touch drive to back everything up. It's $169 on Amazon. To those of you who know these things: is that a decent price? Where else should I look? I feel like I'm going in circles.

First question: How big of a drive do you want?

This one's 300GB, which is about right. I have a 100GB drive in my laptop, and 100 in my desktop. So 300 should hold me a good while.

The reason I ask, is cause I've seen 250's go on sale for around 75 at both Staples and Best Buy. They're WD myBook's and they seem to do a decent job. (We use em here cause they're cheap and seem to hold up)

Did you try NewEgg.com?

We got a 300 gig Maxtor & it was way more than $169 -- so I would say that's a great price.

Yes, we like it.

check sites like http://www.fatwallet.com/ (in particular the Hot Deals! forum and http://www.spoofee.com/ for specials on this sort of thing. They will tell you about sales, rebates, etc.

Also check http://www.pricegrabber.com/ and http://www.pricewatch.com/

Why, Best Buy, of course! We have the new Seagate Mirra 500GB backup servers for only $399... and many other capacities for much less.

When I needed to back up my twin-terabyte array, I bought a WD MyBook TeraByte World Edition - but for the capacity, the Seagate was a much better solution.

(Most Seagate products now have a FIVE year warranty - versus most other companies' three or even one-year.)

The Western Digital "MyBook" external drives are often on sale for $99 for a 250 GB unit.

But I really like the idea of the Maxtor One-Touch. And I don't see that on the Best Buy site.

$399 is right outta my league, snooks.

Maxtor was bought out by Seagate last year and all their hardware is discontinued, and may not be fully supported in the future. That's probably why the lower price points. But Western Digital (whom I dissed for years in the distant past) has recovered since their restructuring problems in 1999-2001, and is actually a very reputable company now.

Again, $99 for a 250 GB external? No one can beat that.

My mom got an iBook and we both use it. the one she got was 175, but she said you can get them as cheep as 70.00. It's real easy - you just plug it in and drag your C to your E.
Im sure it's slightly different on the mac, but not that much.

she said: 250 gig w/o the backup program(which you dont need unless you want scheduled automatic bu's) is about 100
