If I were to bet, I'd bet that they hit your site so you'd look and possibly hire their services.

More likely, they set up a temporary link so that it would register on her stats page in the hopes that her stats page is not password protected (and ergo crawlable by search engines), thus effectively artificially increasing the number of sites linking to them. Its yet another way that spammers have tried to trick the search engines into thinking their lame ass websites are molre popular than they really are, in the hopes of scoring a higher page rank.
