Am I the only one who feels a sense of awe, however distant, at living in a time when the solar system is being redefined?

I feel awe alright - awe at the lengths to which money, time and brainpower can be wasted on something so idiotic, when now of all times, we have much more pressing needs for all of the above. :(

Yeah, but astronomers aren't making foreign policy. That have to have SOMEthing to do while everyone else is screwing up the planet.

In a way I am, but it also shakes my foundations...like, what other assumptions that we now take for granted as scientific certainties are going to turn out to be false.

For all intents and purposes, we will probably still refer to it as a planet. Remember the hoopla (although admittedly some of you are too young) when the US officially changed its measuring standards to the metric system. Yep, back in the 70's there was a rush in the classroom to make sure we all knew what the measurements were, what the conversions were, etc, because in the next year everything would change. 30 years later, we still don't use km/h, liters, or kilos except for imported items and engine sizes.

I've spent my life trying to find my place in the cosmos. Now I'm even more confused. I learned the names and order of the planets back in the 60's, then the order changed, now this! What is this world coming to!!!

My burning question; what will Mickey Mouse do without Pluto?

Date: 2006-08-25 01:04 pm (UTC)

Does it really change anything?

I don't know that from my point of view it does. "Science" flip-flops on so many things anymore, like whether eggs are good or bad for you (they're apparently good, or at least okay, again). I feel like next year they'll decide to make it a "planet" again. I learned it as a planet, and I'll probably always call it a planet (pardon me while I stick my head back in the sand).

I am still waiting for them to name a planet Vulcan! I know they are looking to get rid of pluto to narrow our list to 8, but I would like offically start the "Friends of the Planet Vulcan Project".

Who is with me?? :)

Let's just ignore it, and it will go away. SNICKER

"OH CRAP! DIDN'T WORK." Those rose-colored glasses of mine are beginning to piss me off! Reality sucks, can I get an Amen?
