1. Beth's still in Beirut, apparently. With luck, however, she'll soon be on a ship bound for Cyprus, when she can get a flight Stateside. Her husband bink is still a basket case, of course. Ghee, can't imagine why.

2. My mom called tonight. I knew from the pause, and the, "Look, I have to tell you something," what had happened. One of her best friends for much of her life, Elaine Labe, died. She didn't want to tell me while I was at work-- I've known Elaine all of my life. Of course, I was more worried about Mom. She had been expecting it for a few weeks-- it had been a brief but vicious brain tumor.

3. The dog's name was Rets. His owner was going on vacation the morning after he disappeared. His daughter put up signs, but I suppose she didn't know the best places to put them. He had a friend call me, as I left a message the day before yesterday, when I first saw a sign that read: "Lost: chocolate lab, 100lbs, tan collar, limps on back leg, family pet for 10 years, please call...." And yes, he despised cats. The owner heard my message-- that I didn't have good news-- and had his friend call because he just didn't want to hear if it was bad news. But he called me himself shortly after I spoke to the friend, and estimated Rets had probably killed about 8 cats in his life. He loved to roam, and was uncanny about testing the gate until he sprang it. He apparently lived just up the road. He loved to be shop-vac'd. He had arthritis, but it was starting to respond to treatment.

I'm fucking done.

not to be, you know salt on wound here, but a family pet for 10 years and no i.d tag on that tan collar? or one of those chips?
He'd had a good life with a family, Nik. That's about the best thing any pet can ask for.

Okay... I know this is so not going to help you feel any better about Rets... But these owners should be ASHAMED of themselves. "He loves to roam"? That would be bad ENOUGH if he wasn't known to have killed cats in the past. These people should never be allowed to own pets again. Idiots. Its THEIR fault the cat (your friend's, and the others) died horribly, and Rets fate is on their hands as well.

I agree with the "owners should be ashamed of themselves" sentiment. Sounds like they were blasais about it all. I'm sure they are hurt but come on. They took no precautions for their dog. No tags. No secure area for him to run. He's killed cats before. It's the recipie for disaster and only the dog suffered.

*hugs* to your Mom and her loss. That truely does suck.

Worst part about being a grown-up: realizing that the world is all just one big blob of grey... black-and-white is for kids.

I'm for not bombing places that have my friends in them. But I also know that the only difference between places that have my friends in them and places that don't is a ten minute conversation between two moms about their kids.

Sorry about your mom's friend... it's always a toss-up whether it's easier to lose someone with warning or without. Definitely sucks either way.

And I'm sorry that it's all been topped off by the bit with the dog. Another horrible case where right and wrong, good and bad, are a toss up and there was no good solution.

*hugs* Do come down and see me soon... and I'm not just saying that. I mean it - very very soon. This weekend if possible. I need Mac help, if you need a good excuse. ;)
