Disk Warrior didn't work. Nothing has worked. Bereft of hope-- for now-- I've started looking for options. I called Springboard, and they were astronomical: $212.50 for labour, and $229 for a 100 GB drive. Bundy, astonishingly, was half that-- $179 for a 100 GB drive (which is what Springboard wanted for an 80 GB drive) and $93 to put it in. Bundy's also right around the corner, and they'll only take a day or two to do the work. They usually use Seagate or WD drives.

Could be worse, right?

ETA: Bless [livejournal.com profile] cyberthorn. He works ONE BLOCK from me, we've just discovered, so we're meeting up at Starbucks downstairs after work. If HE says it's dead, THEN it's dead. I still owe him and his lovely [livejournal.com profile] autumnyte wife dinner.

Is this for the restore? To take the platters out and restore the data?

No-- a whole new drive. This one was a 40-gig, so I'd be upgrading.

there are probably 10 people on your LJ who can install that drive...

Yes, but would any of them WANT to?

Nope...

It's NOT easy. At my former place of business we charged four hours' labor to R/R a 12" PowerBook hard drive... at $90 per hour. It's an extremely involved task, not to be undertaken lightly. I'm an Apple Product Professional, and I wouldn't attempt it. [Unquote - from prior post]

That latter option sounds like a great deal. Of course, they're marking up the drive to compensate for the surprisingly low labor charge, but they're marking it up WAY less than the first shop. In your position, even as an APP, I'd run not walk to Bundy's and get it done. Make certain to tell them to save the excised drive in an antistatic package and return it so that you might send it to a recovery place later. Or to a friend with high-level recovery tools - hint, hint. I once did a good-as-new drive recovery for a client just but switching in a known-good controller board.

Oh, and DEFINITELY get a Seagate drive. WD recently switched most production to Thailand while simultaneously cutting costs and increasing production for a big contract with Wal-Mart, and there are reports of declining quality control therefore.

Oh, no-- Kyle's right. There probably ARE numerous people I know who could do it. (You should meet my fList one day.) I just don't want to ask.

I'm still a bit skeptical... ten? But I actually was referring to the "wanting to" part of it.

Keep me posted - I'm really sorry you encountered this difficulty.

Snarf! I won't know for a few days. I have my fingers crossed, but not much hope. Whimper.

I need to go buy roses this weekend. What are you doing?

Lessssee: Friday, I'm going with Dan and some of his friends to see the new XMen. Saturday from 2pm-5pm, the kid is "jamming" with some of his other musically-inclined friends. Sunday at 1pm, I'm finally getting rid of the greys (again.)

Come on down - we have roses here, too! :)

And somehow, by the grammar and the smoking, I knew that.

S'okay. I'll make do somehow.
