I never backed up my photos. I never backed up my letters. I never backed up TRIAZZLE, DAMMIT!

But worst of all? I never backed up my novel.

I'm feeling slightly sick, and fair heartbroken. It's just not responding to anything. The guy at the Genius Bar at the Ardmore store was nice, but grim.

Just shoot me.

ETA:

Hallelujah. I did back up more recently than I thought-- almost exactly a year ago. And I've worked on one part since then, which is in an email file at my office. So all is not lost. That I know of, that is. I know there's stuff on that hard drive I won't realise is irreplaceable til it's gone. Isn't that always the way?

Before you reformat the hard drive, get another opinion. Nothing against the opinion you already were given, but it's worth it, isn't it?

Look for a Mac Geek who has done this before. I'm short in this department....been too long since I worked with Macs. But in the PC business, I'd be all over this. A physical hard drive in the hands of the right techie can work wonders.

But if it's really gone, it's gone. I'd just want a hacker to tell me that. Then I'd believe.

it's probably not that dead, unless there's a hole through the platters.

Honestly, the Apple Store "Geniuses" aren't necessarily that good. They know the official Apple line, but can't do anything unauthorized. What was the diagnosis, what did they try & what did they say you could do with the computer?

Basically, if they didn't pull the drive from the computer and try it in a different system, then ignore anything they told you.

And, also, depending upon how much the content is worth, the data is probably recoverable, even if the drive is dead. But data recovery services can run into the hundreds and possibly low thousands. Depends upon how important it is to you. There are other options to try first, though.

*hugs* That DOES suck with great might, Luv. I'm really sorry. So is now the time to be paranoid and run thru and back up everything on the other compy just in case? Ugh. *huggles*

Yup. That's what I'd do if it were a PC. Even if the disk is damaged, there has got to be recovery software that can pull most stuff off of it.

What Yancey says makes sense, until one considers that at my shop we charged five hours' labor to R/R a 12" PowerBook hard drive... at $90 per hour. It's an extremely involved task, not to be undertaken lightly. I'm an Apple Product Professional, and I wouldn't attempt it. But I am still trying to send DiskWarrior (a powerful disk recovery utility - it's a one-trick-pony, but there's nothing else like it) over to Ysobelle's iDisk, but I've not succeeded in transferring the 485 MB file yet. I've had about considerable (~80%) success with DiskWarrior over the years.

It's me...
