I found The Fucking Cable (tm). I FireWire'd the laptop to the desktop. The desktop obstinately refused to tell me it could see the laptop, then freaked out when I shut the laptop down. That was last night. Tonight, nothing. I tried to restart the laptop with the OSX disc 1. It got to the first menu, then stopped responding, though it recognised the disc, and the cursor still moves.

I want to cry. I haven't had day one of trouble with this thing, but now it's baffling everyone.

But really - sorry for your Mac troubles. They are not the friendliest things to troubleshoot, are they?

I'm thinking you will need to get that hard drive physically out of the laptop and hooked up to something to copy it. Give a call to a local Mac shop and ask them about this sort of thing, how much it costs, etc. Even if you don't go with that route you might get some free info on what to do, etc.
