London, Day 4
May. 4th, 2006 03:35 pmWednesday, May 3th, 2006
Y’know, aside from all the angst with my card, yesterday was not, in all, a bad day. Most of it, of course, is documented in the 200 or so photos that I took—see previous entry for the highlights. I wandered my old neighbourhood, spent some time in the amazing stately sprawl that is the Victoria and Albert (though I missed all the paintings, alas) and in the evening went to dinner with an old friend of my parents’, David Isaacs. He’s a lawyer here, whom they met on their honeymoon, early 50 years ago. He’s absolutely delightful, and we had a very lovely dinner, despite his having banged up his lovely Lexus coming to get me.
In the afternoon, walking, it was lovely to see everything in bloom in the sun. As it’s now 2.30 and I’m only now showered and functioning, I may go on a photo walkabout for the rest of the day. It’d be relaxing, after being up til 5 wound up like a watch spring. I actually walked into the Tesco across the street and said good morning to the very guys to whom I’d said good night a few hours before. I felt like I’d walked in on the shoemaker’s elves—the place was packed with Tesco employees restocking everything. EVERYTHING. My G-d, there was produce and display carnage EVERYWHERE!
I can’t believe I slept so much. I woke up still and tingly and disoriented, but boy, do I feel like I slept. Of course, now I’m on AIM with Mom again, trying to get everything squared away. She says Wachovia has been really nice. I just wish they could get me a new card, though, which they say they can’t. Alas.
Okay—it’s 20 minutes later, and I’ve been able to withdraw enough money to see me through til I come home. I’m waaay pissed, but all is mostly well. It’s suddenly very hot in the city, but once I’ve finished my baguette, I’m out, I think. I want those damned books at the V&A!
