WOOT!

I just sent an email to my supervisor and the company's COO:

"Pig in slop.

Clam at high tide.

Me.

Thank you."

I've been moved to a double-sized cube on the other side of the dividing wall from where I was, and down a bit. The people causing me trouble now cannot see over my shoulder unless they're going to the printer. And some of them have been moved two rows over, all in the name of consolidating work groups. In other words, I'm as far away from them as I can be and still be in the same department. And one of my coworkers-- one I actually like-- remarked, "Man, they must really like you."

Ahhhhh. I may celebrate with some Funker Vogt and Covenant.

Yay you!

Also, semi-related to the women-in-the-workplace aspect of your post... hehe (yes, that's a stretch) and because it's a flash-annoyance, and I think you might relate: Is it terrible of me to react to this:

http://www.cnn.com/2006/TECH/ptech/03/02/microsoft.illiterate.tech.ap/index.html

...with a deeply-sarcastic "Gee, ya know, why don't we use the PCs to TEACH THEM TO READ?"?!

I realize that's a longer-term goal, but if you're going to go in there and change their means-and-methods, heck, aim high, right? This looks to me like a good way to "keep them in their place" while making them FEEL like they're advancing. That always pisses me off. ;)

I think that's a goal, too, but yes, long-term. For now, they need work. And-- much as I hate to say it-- maybe they're fine being illiterate for now. Yes, it's better to be educated, but if the thought that they must learn to read before they can do these jobs scares them off, they won't be any better off than before.

I want to live in a world with a 100% literacy rate, but first I'll take one where women can survive on their own skills.
