So I looked up "Bed and Breakfasts in London" on Google, and came up with a few. There are some that certainly LOOK nice for about £37 (http://www.xe.com/ucc/convert.cgi is my friend!), which would make accomodations much more reasonable, and, thus, my shopping more extravagant. Amusingly, I'm most anxious to be in London on a Tuesday night, so I can go back to Feet First, up at Camden Palace, which is where I spent every Tuesday night of my London Life. I'm sure it's VASTLY different there now, but I'd be interested to see it. I also plan to find the local post office as soon as I get there, so I'm not packing every damned thing I buy into my bags.

This is all if I go, of course.

I just called my Mom to muse aloud at her, and to my great surprise, instead of chiding me-- directly or in-- not to do it, she said, "Well, you know, if you wait until you get closer, you'll probably find some good deals." I find this terrifying. It means, in the language of my convoluted psyche, I may actually do this. I don't have the subtle deterrence of my parents upon which to blame abandoning my plans.

I wish I had the time to go to Scotland AND Ireland AND Paris. But to have that much time, I'd have to take off at Christmastide. O, that I had wings!




ps-- the new Shakespeare: The Biography by Peter Ackroyd that Po gave me is marvelous. And it's giving me many, many ideas.

I was all over thinking, "Meh, none of those bands appeal to me," and then I thought, "Hold on, I was toying with the idea of doing a corset even whilst there."

Seriously, lodging will be by far the largest expense. In practical terms, as I've often found traveling with my friend Cathy, paying for half of a double room is somewhat less expensive than a single. Sometimes it's quite a bit less, even in Japan, where traditionally lodging is charged per person, even in one room. (Simplicity itself: Y10,000 for one person, Y20,000 for two!) Things are changing there, and some hotels have Western-style billing so that it is cheaper for two to share a room. That's certainly the case in the U.S., but my experience in Britain was mostly was that charges were "per Person". When I stayed at the Olympia (a decent little place literally around the corner from Paddington Station) all they had was the largest room in the hotel, a double with balcony, which I got for the single rate. I forget how much I saved. It was nice and SUPER convenient.

Plus, it's possible we could stay for free at my friend Del's house in South-End-on-Sea, a 25 minute train ride into London.
