"House of Flying Daggers."
Hm. I'm amazed-- I didn't cry. Perhaps I'm just not as miserable as I thought-- tonight, at least. But each shot was more beautiful than the last, and perhaps I simply got lost in the visual richness of it. A Chinese film, shot in the Ukraine. Hm.
I think, perhaps, the reason I wasn't overcome the way I was at the only film to which I can compare it-- Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon-- was because I pretty much knew from the beginning someone, if not everyone, was going to die. That rather does free you to enjoy the ride without being wrenched unexpectedly by the end. Or maybe I didn't get as heavily invested in the characters for some reason. I was too busy quivering in visual ecstasy. The overwhelming green of the bamboo forest, the grace notes of Jin's blue and purple brocades, the moon-like perfection of Mei's face, the washing, unfurling streams of silk in the echo game. I could live for a month on such beauty as this.
I'm truly not sure I get the music video with Kathleen Battle. Especially as the shots of her are on video, and it's cut with scenes from the movie on film. That's just jarring.

Other things you might like, as already mentioned...Hero. Also perhaps Kung Fu Hustle? If you liked the atristry of the movement at all as opposed to just the color, that's not a bad way to go.
I have another one, the name of which is escaping me right now. It's basically the same story line as House of flying Daggers, but it's set in Korea instead. Also a really, really pretty movie.
