I shouldn't have gone out the other night. Christ on toast, I'm behind on just about everything, and I was JUST settling down to work when my friend called. Since then, I've gotten absolutely nothing done. Nothing. Well, okay, I did get to the Democratic MeetUp, and I did have a good day at work yesterday, but my evenings have, distressingly, been utterly shot.
On the way out the door the other night, I threw Clue a handful of puppy biscuits to entertain her in her crate and tide her over til I got home to give her dinner. She's been a bit upset, gastroenterologically speaking, for months now, and on the advice of her breeder, Lacy, and Lacy's vet-tech friend, I've had her on a diet of two cups of rice, two spoons of cottage cheese, and half a chicken breast, twice a day. I cook for my dog. Yes, it's official, she eats better than I do. At any rate, she's been doing oh-so-well for these past two weeks-- until the biscuits.
I can't imagine what else it could have been. I changed brands of rice, but it's still basic white rice, nothing jazzy about it. But every day, I get up in the morning, clean up the rug, walk the dog, work, come home, clean the rug, the walls, the crate and the dog. It's been pretty noxious. I skipped her dinner last night, and gave her a small breakfast, and when I came home this e'en, all was well in Kahlualand. I hate to see her sick-- she looks so pitiful. And the less said about the smell, the better. I wind up not getting to bed until some ungodly hour just because my evening's pushed back so much with all the cleaning. I did get her to lie down in a tub of water last night, though. Go, me! Nikki, the puppy-whisperer.
She's going to the vet Saturday morning. Think happy thoughts for my poor puppy.

Date: 2004-01-24 05:15 pm (UTC)Collies can have strange GI things--but I would be very suspicious of giardia as the reason. Talk to your vet about putting her on Flagyl even if they don't find it. I'd also use a day or 2 of canned I/D with the beginning of the Flagyl, then start mixing the rice with it, then the cottage cheese, then dry I/D, then her own dry food. Any time she relapses, go back a step in the diet. As you add one for a few days, then take one of the previous foods out. (if that makes sense)
good luck!
