Ok, first - please forgive the tech stupid question that follows... So, everyone is talking about updating their iPhones. Does that mean new software for same actual phone? Or does it mean a whole new actual phone with new cool stuff? If it is a new actual phone, does that mean everyone will now have their "older" iPhone to sit in a drawer or sell?
This is the new iPhone software, 3.0, that lets the current phone do all sorts of cool things. Next week arrives the new iPhone 3GS, which has new hardware as well as this new operating system. As to people having phones to sell, they may well. I would have, except that because I'm not eligible for an upgrade-- having just gotten this thing in February-- A&TT want $700 for a new 32 gig model.
Actually, the new phone is available starting tomorrow. I should be getting mine from Apple delivered straight to my office. Yay! (Will be bringing in my Mac to set up immediately! ^.^)
As for your upgrade, did they quote you that, or is that based on reports? Because I am finding this: "If you are not currently upgrade eligible, you may have the option to purchase an early upgrade priced at $399 for 8GB (black) or $499 for 16GB (black or white). Two-year contract required. This pricing is available only at an AT&T Store and is currently not available online. Please visit an AT&T Store for details." at http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-phone-service/specials/iphone-info.jsp#0faqSection1
$200 less, but still pricey.
And, for the record, I also brought in my Mac Book Pro (17" sweeeeeet!) yesterday, so I could grab the update as soon as it was available.
Whoops -- that must be an old 3G page with the old pricing and info that I linked to.
Pricing on the 3G (not 3G S) phones:
iPhone 3G ( 8GB) $99 iPhone 3G (16GB) $149 (this is the old model and while supplies last)
Refurbs: deduct $20 from the price above.
Yso: I just want to confirm that you actually went through the website's "Upgrade Eligibility" process. Have you?
With our new line, not eligible for the fully discounted price, we get "iPhone Upgrade: As a valued AT&T customer, we can offer you a discounted iPhone upgrade at a higher price, along with a 2-year commitment and an $18 upgrade fee. Please proceed with the online upgrade process for pricing details. You may qualify for a full discount on a standard iPhone upgrade on 12/23/2010" listed.
We then have the option for 3GS phones at $399 (16 GB) and $499 (32 GB). This is $200 more than the full eligible price, but $200 less than the no commitment price.
I have read that they may have some qualifications, like minimum monthly amount spent on the account, so I could see you maybe not being eligible. But if you haven't, actually try going through the process and see.
