I'm quite pleased Arlen Specter changed parties. I have to say, I'm actually surprised he didn't do it a while ago-- the GOP higher-ups have, I'd imagine, been looking at him somewhat askance for years. I absolutely don't think he'll march in lockstep with the Dems, but I don't like when ANY party does that, or demands it of its members. I've always thought individuality was the Democratic Party's strength as much as its weakness.

It does, of course, annoy the hell out of me that the Republicans are cynically calling this no more than an opportunistic bid for Specter to stay in power. But to those of us who've actually, you know, lived in PA for a while, we know the guy. He's a moderate, pro-choice politician. The further right the GOP goes, the less his ideas seem to fit.

Also? I love how the GOP prophecies doom and disaster with the House and Senate and White House controlled by one party. It's great when it's them, but when it's the Dems, it's incipient apocalypse?
