It's time.

I've maxed out the desktop, and the laptop is close. They're both ridiculously old-- as in pushing ten. It's time.

So I'm in the market now for a MacBook Pro. I wasn't thinking about a new one, per se, but now I'm confused. Buying direct from Apple might not be the worst thing. I don't mind buying bras and books from eBay, but a computer?

Does anyone have any leads? Educator discounts? Ideas? Raspberries?

ETA:

My friend Matt, a Mac expert and a Best Buy employee in New Mexico, can get me a new but discontinued MacBook Pro. 2.5GHz, 250 GB HD, and-- thank G-d-- a matte screen. It'll be $1525, but I'll have to pay tax. I think I'd be an idiot not to take that deal.

last I checked I had a discount from work. I think it's 8%

I have a MacBook that needs a new hard drive. It's not a Pro though. It's about a year old.

Honestly buying through Apple wasn't that bad, though I had multiple discounts for being a student and my mother having a teacher's discount.

Does Apple sell refurbs? I am a PC person, and one can often get impressive deals through Dell's refurb site (as an example).

I think Matt's deal is better. Much as I love you, of course! But it's also for the last generation-- the one WITHOUT the glass screen.

I was wondering if any of my teacher friends could help, but actually, it looks like Matt's deal is a little better, so I am one happy Mac chick.

Make sure you get Apple Care and get it activated right away. I'm jumping through hoops at the moment because I forgot to activate mine and without it a new hard drive from Mac is gonna be between $300 and $700.

New MacBook Pro

Sheesh people, a MacBook Pro (please note correct spelling!) is radically different than a lowly MacBook. And, no one can get "multiple discounts".

Second, AppleCare is easily activated up to 364 days after purchase. I have no idea what that other person was talking about.

Last, Apple (the company is "Apple", not 'Mac') does sell refurbs and clearance units dramatically below cost, but as Nikki points out, the exact model she wants is sold out.

And Nikki, both units which I had transferred show "In Transit" status to my store.
