Thunk between the eyes.
Jan. 13th, 2009 05:02 amSitting here with the still-coughing Amy, I quoted a Who episode. I called it up to play her the audio. And I found I couldn't watch any more of it, and had to shut it down. I could not watch the Doctor. At all.
Then, in an IM with Foxglove, I had a revelation after I recounted the conversation to her:
"It's too soon?" Amy asked.
"Yeah," I replied.
"You have to carry Hamlet around a little longer," Amy smiled.
I do! I had a bit of a dramatic crush on Hamlet.
Or...no, I think I'm still grieving him.
G-d bless Shakespeare.
I'm still mourning the Prince of Denmark.

Date: 2009-01-13 03:11 pm (UTC)We're off to Stratford on Saturday for "Romeo and Juliet," also with the RSC. Then I'd like, also, to try to see "Twelfth Night" with Derek Jacobi. The culture of theatre here is...it's amazing. Unbroken-- even by Cromwell!-- down all these centuries. People here grow up expecting to go see plays. Dozens of theatres are just as viable as the dozens of clubs. It's a lot of big musicals made from movies now, but there are still the classics, and experimental works, and new works, and pub theatre, and and and....
So much of Hamlet raced past me. I bought the latest copy of the script that the RSC put out for this production, but much of it I think I missed, though I concentrated in glorious focus. It just went so fast, one scene piling on the next. I wish, oh, how I wish, I could see it again. But seeing Hamlet dying, the white of his fencing jacket blood-smeared and hand-printed, in the arms of Horatio...that is a fixed moment, now. Yes, partly because of the actor whom I adore, but one brief visual is not enough to affect me this long. The three and a half hours of emotional curl and rise and fall, now, yes, that'll do it.
