Now, that's just funny.
Sep. 5th, 2008 01:01 am So Purple Rain is on TV. It occurs to me I actually have no idea if I've ever actually seen the whole thing before. Twenty four years is a long time, after all. But you know what the funniest thing is? I don't ever remember seeing one particular song before. That song is, of course, "Darling Nikki."
So here I am, 2008, and I'm watching it as I cut a deep red silk skirt, and I just stopped in my tracks. And I realised something really, really weird.
When this movie came out, I hadn't yet changed my name-- but only by a year or two. While it was still fairly recent, and everyone threw the song at me with humorous leers, I still had no inner concept of, "Hey! That's MY NAME!" And tonight, watching with the closed captioning on, I finally, finally did. I finally thought, "Whoa. That's...weird." I finally had the connection I didn't have when two kids in my first-year class at college waited til I was walking down the mall towards Palm Court, and turned their speakers out to blast that song to the entire school as I passed.
It's taken all these years, but dammit, it's finally my song.
I hope Prince doesn't mind.
