Getting my ass in order.
Aug. 29th, 2007 06:28 pmWell, today I've not done much as yet, but I'm still somewhat content. Ryan and I gave my living room, also known as my free-form studio, as thorough a straightening as it's had in a long while. She's absolutely wonderful to have around. I just worry that I'm working her too hard even when we're on the couch all the time watching West Wing. I've never been anyone's Mom. Not that I think she really needs a Mom, but I'm not sure she's ever really had one. Not a stable Mom, certainly. Should I meet her mom, I think I'd be as like to slap her as greet her. And Ryan's only sixteen. Yikes. I want to make sure she has fun at faire, and that I teach her about sewing, as one of the things she wants to do is fashion design. Or being a pastry chef. She's also considering photography-- so Kyle, if you ever have a spare moment, I'd lovelovelove to have her meet you and geek out for a little bit. She's an amazing person, all the more so because she's had a pretty crappy, unsettled life for her so-few years. And now she has to start thinking about college, and she has no adult guidance or support. Except, I guess, at this moment, me.
Yesterday, I took her to Qdoba, and then we disappeared into Borders for a while. She bought a book on 35mm photography, and I bought an annotated Pride & Prejudice and-- I swear!-- a choose-your-own-adventure Pride & Prejudice, where you can be Elizabeth Bennet! You can marry Darcy, marry Mr. Collins and kill him with a copy of Fordyce's Sermons, or even marry Captain Wentworth-- if you marry at all! I love it!
I have much to do as far as corsetry. Very much. I'm very short on truly small corsets, so I want to try to have one ready for this weekend. Other than that, I'm almost good on stock, which I've never been able to say before. I have a lot of orders, and a few repairs. I'm lucky-- I haven't yet had someone come back to me with something I've done gone haywire. That'll happen eventually, but not often, I hope. I'm still deeply troubled by the red corset I sold two years ago: I know now that batch of loops was bad, and I'm afraid it's out there in unwearable condition, with a young lady thinking ill of me. Jay, if you ever see her, PLEASE send her back to me.
Also, today, I took the first steps towards getting my own insurance once my COBRA runs out in January, and, even more exciting, I asked Ann Richer, who handles my Faire insurance, to help me formulate a proposal for group insurance for PARF merchants and participants. It may not work, but it could be something. She says it's possible to go through the Chamber of Commerce to organise. I'm a bit baffled by that at t he moment, but hey, if it works....
Oh, and we've started to get moving on the Funky Formal. Someone made a comment about how everyone just tells me what to do and I go do it, and that pissed me off. Mostly, I put this thing together by myself. Sigh. Meh. It'll all be fine. This is all just my brain dump for the week. My pensieve.
I need sushi, a working studio, and a cabana boy. More than that, probably, but that'll do for now.
