I was very nearly murdered tonight, my friends. No, not by a gun-wielding ruffian from the streets. Nor by my dog in a frenzied fit of sleep-attacking. Nor by pianos falling on my head.

No, I nearly got myself killed by-- got my head exploded by--The Cute.

I was on my way to the diner, to meet with my good friend Bill and consume entirely too many calories. I was driving down the street, a law-abiding citizen, entirely minding my own business. Slightly run-down area of town? Well, yes, but I had my aura of Good Karma to sustain me. And then it happened. I was first in line at a red light, and right there in front of me, properly crossing on a green: not one, not two, not even three, but five geese. A whole family. Mother in the lead-- or perhaps Father, I wasn't that close-- followed by three fairly robust, strapping goslings, in a proper and obedient row, with the lead brought up by Father. Or Mother. I may have shrieked. I know I made some manner of gurgling comment entirely and singularly appropriate to my gender. I may even have swooned. It was just that cute. One by one, they came to the wide, grassy, lightly-forested median in the centre of the road, and hopped jauntily up the curb.

But wait. There's more.

As the light changed, and I made my careful way across the intersection, still crooning, I answered the second-oldest question in the book: why did the geese cross the road? Because there, in the grass, waiting for them...was a Little. Fluffy. Bunny.

It's a miracle I'm here today, folks. A miracle.
