Woot, I did it again.
Mar. 25th, 2004 04:56 amI watched the entire first season of West Wing again. Removed from the constraints of network TV-- just as a DVD-- it's theatre, and glorious theatre at that. Aaron Sorkin talks about how he first learned to write by listening to the cadence of spoken theatrical dialogue, and it shows.
Now, let's jump ahead a few years to the show from two weeks ago, "Eppur Si Muove." Since TelevisionWithoutPity.com put it so succinctly, I'll just copy:
"Tell me this is nothing to worry about," says C.J.. "This is nothing to worry about," Toby predictably answers. Because Sorkin no longer writes the show, this conversation does not proceed as follows: "Because I would want you to tell me if there was something to worry about." "And I would tell you if there was something to worry about." "But you're telling me there's nothing to worry about." "I am." "Then I won't worry about anything." "As suggested by me, in my now-famous 'there is nothing to worry about' speech." Instead, C.J. just says, "Toby." What fun is that? That's not going to get the script up to four hundred pages, you know, and production isn't going to delay itself.
Yeah, there's some snap and sparkle missing, and boy, does Allison Janney look like she's had a hard five or six years. There should be a "but" coming, and here it is: but there's not. It's 5am, figure that out yourself.
How good was West Wing when Sorkin was writing it? I've seen "What Kind Of Day Has It Been" several times now. The end still makes me jump and want to cry. When, whilst looking to see when Season Two was coming on DVD, Amazon told me it was already in pre-order, this broke little chick didn't even think: I just grabbed my credit card. It's not released until May 18th, and I don't know how I'm going to wait.
And the most telling? I have a pretty hot date coming up. I'm fairly psyched up about it. And what am I most concerned about? I have a top three, though in no particular order. One thing's which restaurant to pick, one's none of your business, and one's which West Wing episodes I'm going to show, and how many.
Sometimes I like things like this. They make the unbearable things a hair less frightening for a moment.
Aunt Grace is home. Clue is fine. I'm a little less congested.

Date: 2004-03-26 03:17 am (UTC)good to see you may have found your own ranger rick...
Date: 2004-03-29 04:05 am (UTC)I'm hoping that Sorkin leaving sets a precident- so that the show doesn't have to end after his second term- come on, isn't Lion's Den already in the Toilet? Wouldn't it be neat to see John Goodman do something in between Coen Bros. films (oddly enough the new CB film's the one with Hanks looking like a sleazy Col. Sanders- I think it's there "screw you give us an oscar" flick.
I can't wait till x-day.
*Schmeck!*
