Just got home from The Lion King.

If I can ever, EVER do ANYTHING like that, I'll have justified my time on this earth. I cried and got chills and found my jaw in my lap in alternating waves through the entire show. Absolutely, POSITIVELY unbelieveable. Julie Taymor is a genius.

And I REALLY need to expand my sphere of influence. Definitely time to start studying non-Western textiles and costumes.

I really wanted to see that show. Damn the lack of tickets! I'm going to pay bills and then start mailing you money. Exciting no?

Squeeeeee! Yes, it is!

And if you can scrounge tickets anywhere, this thing is NOT to be missed. The story is cute, yes, and the music in some parts sublime, but the whole package? Theatrical ecstacy.

Oh. my. GAWD.

It opened in Houston thursday night, and I was there.

The movie was released when I was five, and it was my favorite for YEARS, and is still near and dear to my heart. I was so worried that it'd just be all wrong....but the opening had me in tears. I was just bloody overwhelmed. It was beautiful.

Oh, yeah. I cried most of the way through. I just lost it. Chills all over, too. The elephant came right past me and I just died.

What is it with me and elephants this year?!

Julie Taymor is a goddess. I worship at her altar.

Oh, wow! Mom and I were in the mezzanine, so the elephant just came out of nowhere, it was really breathtaking. I just loved how the costumer didn't try so much to *hide* the fact that the actors were human, but integrated it instead.

I feel like a moron asking this, but who's Julie Taymor?

She's the creative force behind the show. She directed it, designed the costumes, designed and built the puppets, designed and sculpted the masks, and did some of the writing. She studied puppetry and maskmaking in Indonesia, and all over the world. (The shadow puppets on the curtain? Like the mouse Scar eats in the beginning? Asian shadow puppets!) I started studying her just before the show came out-- I was in grad school for costume design at the time, and I swore I wanted to be her when I grew up.

If you watch the second DVD of the Disney Platinum set, there's a feature on bringing the show to the stage, and she talks about how important it was to show the human being inside the animal, to connect the viewer even more to the story.

I always said I'd probably go to church more often if communion consisted of cookies and mead ; D
