For several months now, I've been debating putting in the first season of West Wing and watching it through to the end, though I'd have to pick up seasons six and seven to have the full set. But each time I've looked towards the DVD player, I've stopped. I've just realised why that is.

I started with the pilot, and am now on, oh, episode three or four. I've already had numerous goose-bump moments. Laugh-out-loud moments. Inspiring moments. And after each one, I get just a little bit pissed: why the hell can't we have that kind of administration? I revel in the concept of an erudite, ethical, tolerant, courageous President. For President Bartlet, I'd wave the flag. I'd have faith in my Government. I'd join the war effort. Except we wouldn't be at war.

The more I watch this fictional White House, the more ashamed I am of the real one. And the more determined I am to speak out, to support my causes, to fight, and to vote. No one's going to hand me my West Wing country. I have to work for it.

Happy Fourth of July.
