There are a few things I've said over the years that've gotten me into more trouble than I could possibly have imagined when they came out of my mouth.

"Would you like some ice?"

"Sushi? I'd like that."

"There has to be a Funky. Jesus, if no one else is doing it, I'll do it myself!"

And now: "Look, if you really want to, we can make you a new dress."

A wedding dress.

Five weeks before the wedding.

So Emily and I started the morning with her mother's wedding dress in hand, planning on a trip to Fabric Row to buy material for a wedding corset and crinoline. We put the dress on her, and it's a little small and, we discovered, a little short. It's beautiful, but it's not quite right, and she's got more than enough stress already without also having to worry about working out and all that. So I just said, "Well, if you want...."

So now I have seven yards of some utterly gorgeous white-on-white embroidered silk, and some...well, I won't say more til she tells me I can spill some bridal beans. Suffice to say I'm not terribly worried, though bits of it will indeed be a slight challenge. On the whole, I'm not overly concerned. Really. Honest. No, I'm not. I mean it! Actually, I took her measurements again, and have already drafted part of her new bridal couture.

[livejournal.com profile] snugglyevil was with us, and we had a lovely day out. Lunch at the buffet up the street, then up and down Fabric Row, then a break at the Pink Rose, then a detour for sushi take-out and wedding dress window-gazing. In other words, a day of eating punctuated by shopping. We stopped in early at a shop called Aenigma, and the woman who runs the place was so impressed by my sales skills with Emily ("Yes, but if you wear this and this, it'll keep the focus off your hair and onto your face where it belongs.") that she asked me if I wanted a job. Over the lunatic laughter of my let-me-out inner voice, I indicated interest. I left her with my card, and I'm not sure if she looked too closely at it, as when we stopped by later to pick up a comb for Emily's lovely tresses and told her "Change of plans! We're now making a whole new dress!" she seemed equally impressed that I'm a designer. I like that.

Oh, and a young woman who overheard us in Jack B's asked me for one of my cards. She seems to be looking for a corset.

Golly. I could almost make a living from this sewing thing!
