Do you have some compatible Mac-laptops lying around?

At least one, to plug the questionable hard drive into.

Still, I'm way out of my league with the Mac stuff. The last I worked with them was with System 6.5. And I've never had to deal with Mac data at a micro level.

so out here they have the geek squad or something like that. They're computer guys who make house calls, sort-of like a swat team for hard drives and such. maybe try googling that and see what you get?

A compressed disk image of DiskWarrior should be there. I've had about considerable (~80%) success with DiskWarrior over the years. Instructions... Transfer (drag) file to computer with CD recording capability. Expand the image (automatic w/XP or Tiger; use Stuffit otherwise). Burn CD (may require Toast or Nero). Boot from newly created CD; run DiskWarrior. Problem solved! (Probably.) Good luck - call if probs!

One would have to have more money than sense to have "Mac-laptops" just "lying around" [sic]. I should know; I have several PowerBooks!

Seriously, it wouldn't have to be a laptop, or even a Mac. In fact, it'd be vastly preferable if it weren't a laptop, not least for the reason that you'd have another hard drive to run diagnostics from. And it'd be better if it were a PC because there are no high-level hard drive hardware utilities which run on the Macintosh's PPC architecture or OS. It's all moot because of this (http://ysobelle.livejournal.com/200933.html?thread=1140965#t1140965), however.
