My Dad called to tell me there was a show on about the roots of Jewish music in America. Oh, boy, was it glorious. Tons of ancient film footage from the turn of the century onwards. I knew there was once a vibrant and vital Yiddish theatre culture, but I never really thought about how some of it must've made it to film. The weirdest thing is to see those things I always thought of as family humour and my parents' in-jokes right there in black and white. I'm so used to being a minority, I almost can't grasp seeing my traditions in a mainstream forum like movies.

But it makes me very happy to be Jewish, and to live as a Jew.

It was called "From Shtetl to Swing," and it was done by-- laugh if you will!-- a French company. It was on Great Performances, so I'm betting there'll be a DVD soon, if not already. It was WELL worth it!
