I have to tell you, I am SO happy to be renting a house in Philadelphia.
I pay $725 for a two story, plus basement, two bedroom house. I had a friend who paid $1400 for a townhouse. We live in a cute, quiet, family friendly neighborhood. The previous owner put in GOOD windows and stuff, so our utilities are low (Except when we're running central air all summer)... I honestly don't know why everyone's not doing this!
And, when we moved out of our first two-bedroom apartment, three years ago now, it was because the rent was going up to $825.
And did I mention my three cats are REALLY really happy?
